About

THE CLUES YOU NEED TO STAY SAFE AROUND TRAINS AND TRACKS ARE ALL AROUND YOU. Flashing lights, bells, gates, no trespassing signs, and more are clearly marked for your protection. By being aware of your surroundings you can save lives, including your own!

01

Be Alert

Preliminary data shows that 49 people in Florida lost their lives in rail-related incidents in 2023, all attributed to either trespassing or crossing collisions, and nearly 80 others were injured.

02

Look Around You

At any grade crossing, there may be up to a dozen visual, auditory, and physical safety features such as flashing lights, ringing bells, gates, no trespassing signs, and more.

03

Obey Traffic Laws

Track tragedies can be prevented by following simple safety rules in place, including traffic laws, that are designed to keep you safe. The simplest rule is to keep off tracks.

Rail Safety First

Safety is a top priority for SunRail and when you are around train tracks, it should be yours as well. We want everyone to be smart and safe – whether you live and work near railroad tracks, or drive over them during your daily travels.

01

Keep Back 25 Feet (2 Car Lengths) From Tracks

Trains are wider than the tracks and getting too close is extremely dangerous. Always be aware of your surroundings and keep back at least 25 feet from tracks. Maintain a clear view of your footing and avoid walking through slippery and unstable or uneven areas.

02

Avoid Distractions Near the Tracks

Trains can’t swerve and can take more than one mile to stop. Avoid texting, earbuds, and phones when near the tracks. In an emergency, get as far away as possible and dial 911 – taking note of any rail crossing markers.

03

Obey Railroad Signs and Signals

At any time, trains can travel from either direction on any track. They move much faster than they appear, making it difficult to judge their speed and proximity. Always maintain a safe distance from train tracks and obey all railroad signs and signals.

04

Do Not Walk or Place Objects on the Tracks

Walking or placing objects on the tracks is trespassing and puts you in imminent danger. Train speed can transfer to objects on the track creating high speed and deadly projectiles.
